Make A Great First-Impression With
Fun-Ideas To Personalize Your Invitations…

Back in the day when all weddings were expected to be formal and traditional, white and ivory were the colors of choice. You’d see some combination of doves, rings, crosses, flowers and wedding bands embossed on a formal yet plain card stock. Well, those days are over...

The last decade or so has been about individualization and creativity. What does that mean for you? The sky’s the limit for creating your invitations...

The new game is to create invitations that are personal yet all-inclusive. They really speak to who you are as a couple as well as the play and fun and warmth you want your friends and family to experience around your union to your lifetime partner.

The first thing to do is look at the theme of your wedding and reception. If there isn’t really one, or if it’s simply a set of colors, you have a lot of room to play. Let’s look at two extreme examples and then set you free to create.

Example #1: Formal

For a more formal feeling to your total wedding experience, you’ll want to set up your guests from the beginning. Have invitations that are relatively formal. They should reflect your wedding colors (one, two or three maximum). They will have clean edges (not torn or cut with any type of shears) and some type of script-like print done professionally such as through a major printing company.

One nice way to mail a formal presentation that is still personal and creative is use layers. You can attach layers yourself or pay someone else to perform this service for you. You may use a variety of materials from a delicate ribbon or lace to a more robust pipe-cleaner or grommet to attach the various layers to each other.

One very popular material used in top layers in recent years is vellum. Vellum is a thin opaque paper giving whatever is underneath it a soft slightly blurred look. One idea used frequently is taking one of the engagement photos printed right on the vellum.

Example#2: Playful and Casual

If this is the case, find something you both are interested in, your life’s devoted to, you are passionate about, etc. Let’s say for example you two spend much of your spare time boating or sailing, you might choose a nautical theme.

You could explore shapes of boats, sails, wheels or portholes. You could look at the traditional sea colors of navy and white. There are many avenues to explore.

Envision This...

A navy and white sail-shaped invitation and when you open it to read the details there is also a photo of the happy couple inside a porthole.

Another wonderful example is of a lovely couple who are both players/actors at their local renaissance festival. They love the period and dress. Their invitations were on hand made paper with rough edges and includes a background swatch of plaid cloth as was used in that period’s kilts. The reception directions included burned edged paper which was quite authentic.

When you are exploring the creative route, there really aren’t any rules as long as all the pertinent information is included.

General Invitation Etiquette

As for general invitation etiquette there are some rules to use as a general guideline. You should always give your guests at least one month notification so that they may schedule in advance but no more than two months notification so it’s not so far into the future they forget. Ideally six weeks is the target.

It is also proper to handwrite all envelopes but in this day and age many people are simply running their envelopes through the printer and it’s no longer frowned upon.

So just choose how much work you’re willing to put into personalizing everything and do what’s most comfortable.

One Last Word About Postage...

Make certain how much postage is required for your envelopes especially if it is an unusual size or shape. It would be embarrassing to have all your invitations to arrive with postage due or get returned with stamps all over it.
