Chapter 5
Wedding Gift Registry Etiquette

If you are registering yourselves at different stores for wedding gifts, place no more than 2 store references in your invitation. It is considered gauche to add more than that.

You can, if needed, remark “for additional ideas call (name and contact information)”. Try to keep your selection varied with plenty of small (up to $20) and medium ($20 to $100) dollar items. The general rule of thumb on large items ($100 and up) is 5 or 6 per 100 guests. This way all budgets will be accommodated and people won’t have the experience of being “cheapskates” if your list were loaded with large items.

People can easily mix and match items to fit right in their spending range and the people with larger budgets will get the most important large items that you want. Your list should never exceed the number to gifts as number of guests.

So, for example if you have 200 guests, your gift list should never contain more than 200 items. This is quite high considering many of your guests will likely arrive and purchase gifts as couples.

Also, there is always a straggler or two who will just select a gift for you of their own choosing and ignore your list(s) entirely.

Most stores have pre-printed cards you can simply drop into your invitations, but if not consider printing your own. Do not put gift registry information directly on the invitation itself, not even the websites. It can be perceived as “begging”. Remember that people may take these cards with them to shop, so small and portable is best – most commonly the size of business cards is used.
