Wedding Expenses
Who Pays for What?

 
These days it is not very significant who pays for what but traditionally there were specific roles.
 

Couples today will often  pay for most or all of their own wedding expenses so bear in mind that your payment schedule may vary significantly from the traditional roles.

Whatever you choose to do, make sure it’s comfortable for everyone involved.

Everything you do has ways to save money, if that’s the concern.

Do your research carefully and interview prospective services meticulously. The more information you begin with the better!

   
Here are some general guidelines for determining who's responsible for the expenses...

The Bride:

  • Gifts for bridesmaids

  • Gift for groom

The Groom:

  • Gifts for groomsmen

  • Gift for bride

The Bride’s Family:

  • Groom's ring

  • Invitations, thank-you notes and all accessories and postage

  • All engagement & wedding photos and video

  • Any announcements/wedding programs

  • Bride’s parent’s formalwear

  • Bridesmaid’s luncheon and first engagement party

  • Bridal gown and all accessories

  • All flowers and floral arrangements for both the wedding and reception except bride’s bouquet, mothers & grandmothers corsages, boutonnieres for best man and ushers.

  • All fees associated with the location of the wedding and reception (marquee, table or chair rental, carpet etc.)

  • All fees associated with entertainment (pianist, singers, band or DJ, etc.)

  • Transportation of bridal party (limo(s) or other)

  • Charges for any food or beverages including the cake, dinner or hors d’oeuvres and alcohol if served

The Groom’s Family:

  • Bride's ring
  • Engagement party (following the bride’s family engagement party)
  • Rehearsal dinner
  • Groom's thank you notes and other personal stationary
  • Groom's formalwear
  • Groom's parents formalwear
  • Bride’s bouquet
  • The marriage license and any officiant's fees
  • Honeymoon expenses (includes limo to airport)

Attendants:

  • Best man hosts bachelor party (or ushers if it is not appropriate for the best man)

  • Maid of honor hosts bridal shower and/or girls night out (bridesmaids may also host these) Bridesmaids and groomsmen pay for their formalwear and all accessories

Optional Expenditures:

  • Local attendants may offer non-local attendants accommodations with them

  • Attendants may offer individual gifts or pool their money and give gifts as a group

  • Parents of the bride or groom may offer heirloom rings

  • Bride’s family may host the rehearsal dinner

  • Parents of the bride or groom may pay for attendant’s formalwear and/or accessories

  • Bride’s family may purchase bouquets and corsages for mothers and grandmothers

  • Couples may cover all ceremony costs

  • One family pays for photography and the other pays for videography

  • Either family may arrange for housing/feeding/babysitters/transportation for out of town guests

  • Grooms family may step in to pay for certain costs such as reception-related items

  • Couples may choose to buy gifts for anyone else who helped with planning
